A casino night fundraiser held Saturday by Westminster Adoption Group Services, also known as WAGS Pet Adoption, at Meadowlark Golf Club in Huntington Beach raised over $5,000 in support of orphaned dogs and cats.
The first-ever event for WAGS –http://www.wagspetadoption.org – was staged to boost public awareness of the organization and its goals, says Michelle Russillo, spokesperson for the group.
On hand for the event were Sergio Contreras, President of the Westminster School Board, Lynn Kegan of HGTV’s Designed to Sell and Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible. Also attending was Southern California artist Roberto Concha, who found the evening “A very fun event—and the casino concept quite enjoyable.”
Westminster Adoption Group Services is contracted by the City of Westminster to assist with stray animals picked up by city services.
“We are dedicated to providing care, advocacy and shelter for lost and homeless animals,” says Russillo. “That includes sheltering and caring for them, investigating and combating animal cruelty, rescuing neglected pets—and helping educate our community about responsible pet care and related issues.”
Proceeds from the evening will go to this and other activities which help place animals in new homes, adds Russillo.
Dr. Tia Greenberg, the founder of the WAGS pet adoption group, has her own veterinary practice in Westminster. She notes she was thrilled to see “so many adoptive families turn up and introduce us to others willing to celebrate WAGS and help the animals in our care.”
She adds that rescued pets receive the same standard of veterinary care as others brought to her practice. “Before a homeless animal is adopted out it receives medical care, behavioral evaluation, spaying or neutering, a microchip implant, vaccinations, flea medication, deworming and ultrasound as indicated by breed or medical condition.”
“Donations such as these allow us to adopt out forty or more pets per month and to keep our euthanasia rate below 2 percent,” says Dr. Greenberg.
